As Resident Services Director at CedarStone Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community can transform senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just helpful — it’s essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating Belonging Through Everyday Moments

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they belong.

From my perspective, every interaction is an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the emotional and social benefits that come with genuine human connection.

To me, community is what makes senior living special. It is a place where people come together to form new friendships, create lasting memories, and share meaningful experiences.

Supporting Connection From Day One

Building connections among residents is essential. When residents form friendships, they feel less isolated, more engaged, and more fulfilled in daily life.

I encourage these connections through our Buddy Program, which helps new residents feel welcome from the very first day. Buddies give tours, answer questions, invite new neighbors to events, and offer support as they settle in. Most importantly, they help create genuine friendships that make our community feel like home.

We also strengthen our connection with the surrounding town through ongoing partnerships and shared experiences. Local churches visit weekly, and residents enjoy regular shopping trips and dining outings. We collaborate with community groups to host educational programs and welcome neighbors to join us for special events. These efforts build meaningful relationships beyond our doors and help residents feel connected to the town they love.

Bringing People Together

One of my favorite ways to bring people together is our weekly Friday Happy Hour. Residents gather to enjoy live music, homemade snacks, and great company. It is always a wonderful time to relax, laugh, and connect.

To help new residents feel comfortable, I introduce myself early, answer any questions, review the events calendar, and invite them to upcoming experiences. These simple gestures set the tone for a warm, welcoming start.
