Lessons from the Journey: Stories from Families Affected by Dementia

Category: Dementia Resources

Author: Bobbi Weepie, Memory Care Director

As Memory Care Director at CedarStone Senior Living, I asked families navigating the complexities of dementia care to delve into their heartfelt experiences. Their stories are a testament to resilience, love, and the profound lessons learned along the way. Following is wisdom shared by those who have walked this path. It offers insights that resonate deeply with caregivers and families alike.

Lessons in Patience and Adaptability

Families caring for a loved one with dementia quickly learn that patience and adaptability are essential. Some days feel easier than others, and it is important to recognize when to step back, take a walk, or pause before trying again with a different approach. Caregivers often remind themselves that their loved one is not being difficult on purpose—the disease changes how their brain processes situations. Asking gentle questions, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and allowing time to process can make a significant difference.

Patience also means accepting behaviors rather than correcting them. One caregiver shared how her loved one wears multiple shirts or hides recliner cords; habits rooted in his past work with his hands. Instead of correcting, she helps him “fix” the chair, allowing him to feel purposeful. Families learn to pick their battles, let go of the need to be right, and focus on what truly matters—comfort, dignity, and joy.

At times, patience even means choosing compassion over truth. If a question’s answer would be upsetting, it may be better to gently redirect or offer a reassuring “white lie.” Planning extra time for outings or appointments is also critical. When caregivers feel rushed, loved ones often sense it too, leading to stress on both sides.

Family Relationships and Dementia Care

The dementia journey often reshapes family relationships, sometimes strengthening bonds in unexpected ways. Some family members step up, while others may step back. This imbalance can create stress, especially when long-distance caregiving is involved or when denial of the diagnosis causes conflict. Many caregivers find peace by understanding that denial often stems from fear or lack of knowledge.

Moving a loved one closer, when possible, can ease stress and allow families to spend meaningful time together. Caregivers also note the importance of communication—keeping siblings and relatives informed, even when decisions must be made quickly. Family text chains, shared photos, and open conversations help keep connections strong and encourage involvement. Educating family members about dementia builds understanding and strengthens the support network.

Advice for Families Beginning the Journey

Families who have already walked this path offer practical, heartfelt advice:

  1. Plan Ahead: Do not wait until a crisis forces decisions. Tour communities early and narrow options before they are needed, making future transitions smoother.
  1. Advocate Relentlessly: You know your loved one best. Take detailed notes at doctor visits, ask questions, and push for answers.
  1. Prepare for Tough Choices: Selling a car, home, or farmland is never easy, but these decisions often ensure safety and quality of life. While new residents may resist at first, many adjust with time, finding friendships and engagement in their new environment.
  1. Educate Yourself: Attend support groups, listen to podcasts, and learn from others who have walked this path. Knowledge reduces fear and provides tools for better care.
  1. Cherish the Time: No matter where your loved one is on their journey, showing up consistently and spending time together creates memories you will never regret.
  1. Keep Showing Up: Every journey is unique. What matters most is being present, offering love, and walking alongside your loved one every step of the way.
